Alluere at Princes Wharf

Over the last year and half I have been working with Aden Narkowicz on Alluere, an interactive public art installation at Princes Wharf Shed One which is located adjacent to Salamanca Place in Hobart, Tasmania. I am finally uploading some images of the project now that the final handover has been made. We had a launch performance in July coreographed by Alice Glenn that involved 30 or so Tasmanians of all ages. If you are down in Hobart you should check it out. It operates every night from sun down.

Outside - In and other things

It has been a really busy few weeks in the studios. I have been working on things for our exhibition Outside - In which opened in the Chapel on Thursday night and runs until this Friday. I have taken some dodgy snaps of my work in the show on my phone as I ran out the door this evening. You get the idea at least. We'll be photographing it all properly tomorrow.

I resumed work on the illustration job that I am doing at the moment, a timeline of the 20th Century as placemats. These guys below are the winter Olympians from 1922.

The studio has been really colourful lately with my paintings and Noella's beautiful creations. I am loving all the yellow. The crazy storms of late have been keeping me mesmerised. I love clouds. There have been some really beautiful ones.

I've been thinking of my dear friend Pamela who passed away earlier this year, because the poppy seeds that she gave me have finally grown and a hugeeee poppy opened its head this morning. It made me really happy and really sad all at once.

I was invited up to the MacDonald's beautiful property on the Thule lagoon for an artist in residence. They have a beautiful studio/cottage on the banks of the lagoon. I have been slow in uploading these, but here are some shots from my time there. I am so greatful for the time there. I was able to switch off my phone and drew and sew all day long!

It's been a busy week and month in the studio and around and about. (Above) Jess came and printed her wedding invitations on my press which was so lovely. I have been editioning etchings... keep your eyes peeled in the galleries in the coming weeks... and I've been sewing some lovely things for Kinder Gallery... Tea in the studio is always so lovely and well thought out. I love being around people who are engaged in their work too. I found the orange kettle for Alice and Atticus is rarely asleep as he is here... such a rare treasure. x

An amazing week in Hobart last week. Capped off with birthday celebrations with Ernest Hemmingway, Blake, Alice, Nate, Otis and Aden at Garagistes. Amazing food. We had the launch of Alluere. Considering the weather, it went wonderfully well!

I am getrting stuck into my own work now. Finishing illustration jobs and editions of etchings. So excited to be back at the Schoolhouse tomorrow.

I have been doing some illustrations for my Dad's book. I made this image with a red mask but really liked the strange colour so here it is. The actual image for the book is black and white.

I got to the studio today and Gemma in the upstairs studio had her sewing class on and there was a yellow cord hanging out of her window for her students to ring the bell. I really loved seeing it. It made me think of Rapunzel. So here is a little drawing inspired by it.

Houses + New Prints + Paintings at Klopper

Not some of the best photography but you get the gist! I have some paintings in a lovely shop called Klopper in the South Melbourne market. They are very well housed amoungst the beautiful items. They are well prices and surrounded by yummy food stalls. Go and have peek.

The prints are some new images that I am working on. These are proofs. So far I am happy. i have been trying out some new water based inks. I of course forgot this fact when I went to paste the rice paper onto my plate with water/rice glue. It bled everywhere, even onto my very expensive etching blanket. I was very sad. I was rewarded after with the big big print (the last image here) it is well etched and I feel ready to edition it (with the oil based inks!)

A great day at the markets today finding great treasures like the blundstones for $10 and the crocheted blanket also $10. Atticus and I walked through the Botanical gardens this afternoon and encountered beautiful succulents and cacti. The colours are amazing.

I have been meaning to blog about this for a week now, but it was one of those things where the camera battery died and I couldn't get my act together to plug it in and then download the pictures! Anyway, I have some work up in this beautiful little cafe in Spotswood called the Duchess of Spotswood. They do fantastic food and the owners are so lovely. It's very busy and you might wait a while for a table on the weekends, but it is well worth it. Go check it out! x

I have been hanging my work in my space. It is such a homely space that it is nice to make it feel warmed by work. It is also nice to get to know my work by viewing it on the wall every day. I have been painting little houses that my grandpa made for me out of blocks of offcuts. He is a very clever wood worker and I am privileged to have him help me on this little project. I will be selling the houses at the Show and Tell market this Saturday!!

So it's been a pretty exciting week for Alice and I. We just took on the lease at the old Steiner School senior school in Abbotsford. We spent a big day ripping up grotty carpet and cleaning bathrooms (5 of them) and walls, weeding gardens and dreaming up plans for the future!

I made some green tomato chutney from the last of my tommies from the garden. It is pretty yum. Has a nice amount of chilli happening. Here is some pics of the studio. My good friend Pamela passed away last week. She was a real inspiration, artistically, creatively and as a person who embraced everything great in life. She loved eucalyptus and we did a lot of natural dyeing with them, so I have been painting some wreathes and thinking about her. I will really miss her.

I have had a busy work, photographing work, being a bridesmaid and doing some drawing. All in all a great week. I am looking forward to getting back in the studio this week to finish off paintings for the show in Sydney in March.

We had the unofficial non-opening of Alluere, an interactive lighting installation by Aden Narkowicz and myself in Hobart last night. Lots of family and some friends kindly flew down from Melbourne and drove from Launceston for a viewing of the project that was originally to launch yesterday but has been officially postponed until the 8th of July. It was great to see it all in action and to imagine it's future as a day-to-day part of Hobartian's lives.

I realised that I haven't put up images of my recent paintings. The top one was a commission and the last three are for the show in Sydney in March. The last three are not quite finished. Actually the last one here is quite different now. I made the vessels more like ocean liners and there is more detail in the water. I will photograph the progress when I return to the studio on Thursday.

Here is the proof of my Impressions print for the Australian Print Workshop fundraising show at the end of the year. I am really excited about this print. It will be a lot of work but I want it too look good! It is actually three plates and all the houses and the boat are cut out and collaged onto the back ground. It just needs a little bit more detail and it will be ready to edition.

Another week in Hobart and working very hard on the light installation. We are slowly starting to see results now. Woke up to some serious snow on Thursday...

We had Adam and Eden's wedding on the weekend, so now I can finally show you the belt that I embroidered for Eden's dress. It has two sides, one for the ceremony (the embroidered side) and a side for the reception (the quilted bright side). I am really pleased that it worked out so well.

Here is a new textile piece that I have been working on for a while. I think it is my favorite so far and I am not sure that I can give it up.

I made these collages and watercolours today too which are sort of mock-up for some large paintings that I am going to make. I am enjoying burnt orange at the moment and golden yellow as you can tell! These ideas need a bit more work, but I think they are getting somewhere.

baby quilt, lamp shades and Hobart again

I can finally blog about the quilt I made for my friend's friend's new baby which is due any minute. The family is based in Tasmania so I wanted to make the quilt really fresh and green. I also wanted to reference the lovely houses in Tasmania that feel very English. I used my favorite Liberty print of the houses and boats to evoke this.

The lampshade is a self indulgent endeavor for our bedroom. On one side there is the cycling man and on the other the city. They look great with the lights on at night. I'd love to do a long artwork for above the bed on the little man cycling through the hills... one day.

Here are some other projects that I made as birthday presents for some lovely friends of mine.

And finally... I was back in Hobart last week. The snow clouds were ever present on the mountain. Very beautiful from the wharves.

I finally got up the courage to start painting again... it has taken me all year, but for some reason I got into the studio today feeling really inspired to get stuck into them. It is probably spurred on by ordering new stretchers for a commission. This painting started out as a European based painting, but now I am interested in creating a more Australian feel. You can't see it so well in this image, but Captain Cook and his men are scratched in the clouds and the mountains of Hobart appear in the background. I have two more paintings on the go and I think I have worked out how to resolve my etchings...!!

It has been a crazy little old month since I last posted. I can't believe it have been so long...

So I can talk about what I have been up to now! Aden Narkowicz and I have been commissioned to create interactive artistic content for an external lighting structure at the Princes Wharf development site in Hobart. It is pretty exciting! More to come soon...

Aden and I were also lucky enough to get a residency at the art school in Hobart, which is perfectly located across the way from the site of the project.

It's nice to be back in Melbourne at the moment and working on the project from here as well as my own work and hanging out with pupski (as featured with his mates in Warrandyte.) I have been working on some new sewn collages that I started down in Hobart. I am looking at Wardian cases and filing them with strange objects like paper planes and clouds. I like that idea that settlers not only brought plants over to Australia in these portable glass houses, they also brought ideals and ways of thinking.

These are just works in progress.

I have decided to revisit this painting too. I need to finish it! I like the black but my thoughts are that I might paint over it in a soft greeny white... any thoughts?

Today i have been multi-tasking! I did and illustration this morning... hopefully it is well received and this afternoon i have been throwing the ball to Atticus across the studio while I print these stamps on calico. I am trying out rolling up and printing with a barren. The ink is a bit dull. It is waterbased... I am not so sure about it. I might try a different brand next time and use some fabric that is a bit nicer than calico!

I am going to use these to make up some lampshades with Laura on Saturday with our furnishing instruction books! We'll see how we go!! Market stalls here I come! xx

Another week in Tasmania. This time Blake came along too and we went walking around and about with Aden. The first lot of images are on Mt Rufus. Such a beautiful landscape. We were all pretty rugged up against the cold. The second half of photos are from Roaring beach down on the peninsula. Beautiful beautiful.

It has been a big week and weekend. there is a lot going on at the moment... mostly fun things really. i have been doing lots of driving lately. a weekend down in Somers for a wonderful dinner party at a friend's house. we went for a soggy beach walk and i visited Pamela who wowed me with her scarf eco-printed with eucalyptus cinerea! The reddest red i have ever seen!

The explorer you see here is a quick snap of the etching plate with a fantastic aquatint thanks to Jennifer's wonderful studio in Red Hill.

The top pics are my studio and the one's below 'Melbourne' are of Laura's studio... I hope you don't mind Laura! I went to Laura's studio on the weekend too for a little craft day. I was mostly in awe of all the beautiful things to look at.

I'm in this group exhibition free brains at sjs gallery, fitzroy. The opening night is on friday 9th july 7pm but unfortunately I will be in Tasmania... but you should go along! I have three sewn collages that are beautifully framed by the guys at Grate Designs in Elsternwick.

So this last week has been one for finishing projects and beginning some others. Mainly finishing though! An exciting thing was to find the Melbourne University magazine in the post (being a VCA graduate) and my illustration for this article.

The print is one that I finished the edition of last week. It is called "Dreaming Riverside" and is available at Port Jackson Press and the Printmaker gallery for now.

The quilt is finally finished... I showed it to you in the previous post but here it is with its lovely Liberty fabric binding.

The embroidery is something that I am starting on a piece of dyed silk. I could embroider all day if I could.... sigh...
