log ladies

this is a work in progress for an animation that blake and i are making. it comes from some photos that blake took out on the farm at christmas of all the logs on the side of the path. there are photos of us walking along the track, so i have merged the two images to create the log ladies. it is just a sketch from my journal, but here, blake has superimposed textures and colours onto the the people. it is interesting seeing them walk out of your journal and jump to life. i love animation for this reason and would like to do more of it.

searching for invisible cities

finally i have come to the end of a long haul with a piece that i've been working on for a while. i have been trying to realise a two-dimensional piece in the style that i would like to make my three dimensional book that i am working towards for my masters project.

i am mostly happy with the outcome. the colours work well together, but if anything, i would take more care is the placement of images next time, and the use of space. however, i have learnt from this project and now i can be more conscious of it in the work to come.

now i am going to have a break from this kind of work (it is very labour intensive and all consuming...) and i am going to focus on some more commercial illustrations. i want to create a series of food-based images. i will let you know how it goes.

e is for...

here is an alphabet letter 'e' for a collection that our class made. i am pleased with mine mostly. i find it hard to make things digitally, because they lack the tactility of a hand made work. i don't think it is too flat though.
i have been working hard on a house that folds out from a book. i am making it in fabric and paper now. i want to light it up with leds. i will post some images of it gets made.

12x12

we had a project to make some work 12x12cm referring to the word 'cover'. My two pieces are called 'un cover' and 'bed cover'. i only had two days to make them so they are not perfect, but i am pretty happy with the result. i like the figurative use of textiles, inspired a lot recently by the book becky lent me called, 'asafo! african flags of the fante'.

all i want to do is draw with thread at the moment. i want to make more dolls in the coming weeks. little friends for people. some stamped fabrics and sewn. maybe a mixture of animals and humans, but not too obvious.

the other image is from my fold out book that i am making. when it is finished i will photograph it and put in on here. it is about the travels of marco polo from childhood to adulthood. it is a bit silly. i am not sure if i like the watercolour, it is a bit uptight maybe. i like the looseness of images with more space around them. i have been drawing in a big sketchbook and the space is liberating. maybe i need to incorperate more scale into the book next time. more cropping, copuing and cutting... hmmm

horses and clouds

i have been quite productive this week, making horses and sending clouds and rain back to australia. i am pleased with how things are going. there is a nice connection developing between the sewn work and the works on paper. three-dimensionality is slowly taking form.
