Printmaking without a Press class at the Art Room 

10th August 2014

The first in my series of Illustration classes Printmaking without a Press will introduce students to a variety of non-toxic printmaking techniques that don’t require a printing press. Students will be able to continue using these techniques at home or in their studios to incorporate into their illustration work.

Techniques we will cover are stamp making and relief printing, stencils and mono printing. Students will begin the day by drawing a collection of things from nature in preparation for creating prints, so please bring your sketchbooks and favourite drawing tools. 

Back to the Press

I want to make a concerted effort to update this here blog a bit more now that I am back in the studio part time. Two weeks ago I got back to my beloved press and printed a few proofs of two new plates that I am working on. Tomorrow I will edition the plates that last Friday I went and aquatinted at the Australian Print Workshop. Fingers crossed it comes out ok.

Drifting Homeward

I am in an exhibition at Printmaker Gallery at the moment which opened on the 2nd November and runs until the 30th November. Here are a few pics from the opening. There are three of us exhibiting. Kevin Foley, Robyn Rayner and myself. Our works all reference the Australian country and our colour palettes really tie in nicely together.

A few months back you might remember my post about the zine workshop that I taught at the McDonald's farm in Barham, well I finally got the film developed- months later! The photos came out beautifully (Thank you Wendy for the loan of the camera). As you can see the workshop was heaps of fun. Hopefully we will do it again soon!

Here is the proof of my Impressions print for the Australian Print Workshop fundraising show at the end of the year. I am really excited about this print. It will be a lot of work but I want it too look good! It is actually three plates and all the houses and the boat are cut out and collaged onto the back ground. It just needs a little bit more detail and it will be ready to edition.

Today i have been multi-tasking! I did and illustration this morning... hopefully it is well received and this afternoon i have been throwing the ball to Atticus across the studio while I print these stamps on calico. I am trying out rolling up and printing with a barren. The ink is a bit dull. It is waterbased... I am not so sure about it. I might try a different brand next time and use some fabric that is a bit nicer than calico!

I am going to use these to make up some lampshades with Laura on Saturday with our furnishing instruction books! We'll see how we go!! Market stalls here I come! xx

studio love

It has been a big week and weekend. there is a lot going on at the moment... mostly fun things really. i have been doing lots of driving lately. a weekend down in Somers for a wonderful dinner party at a friend's house. we went for a soggy beach walk and i visited Pamela who wowed me with her scarf eco-printed with eucalyptus cinerea! The reddest red i have ever seen!

The explorer you see here is a quick snap of the etching plate with a fantastic aquatint thanks to Jennifer's wonderful studio in Red Hill.

The top pics are my studio and the one's below 'Melbourne' are of Laura's studio... I hope you don't mind Laura! I went to Laura's studio on the weekend too for a little craft day. I was mostly in awe of all the beautiful things to look at.

So this last week has been one for finishing projects and beginning some others. Mainly finishing though! An exciting thing was to find the Melbourne University magazine in the post (being a VCA graduate) and my illustration for this article. 

The print is one that I finished the edition of last week. It is called "Dreaming Riverside" and is available at Port Jackson Press and the Printmaker gallery for now. 

The quilt is finally finished... I showed it to you in the previous post but here it is with its lovely Liberty fabric binding. 

The embroidery is something that I am starting on a piece of dyed silk. I could embroider all day if I could.... sigh...

bunting flags and explorers

so there are two projects on the go here. i have been making lots of buntings to sell. i have fallen in love with some of them and don't want to lose them! but it must be done... i must be brave!

the prints turned out okay. this is the print i have touched up with black watercolour to give me a guide as to how dark i need to etch the black... the circular window into a building is a little sketch... leading somewhere... not sure where yet.
